Toilets can get clogged at the least expected time leaving you with near embarrassment, especially if you are a guest at your friend’s house. What will you do to ensure the water you flushed goes down the drain?
If you suspect that the toilet bowl is about to overflow with water, remove the lid from the tank and close the toilet flapper. That would stop the water from entering the toilet bowl. You can also shut off the water supply from behind the rear of the toilet. That will help prevent the toilet from overflowing and also make it easy to unclog the toilet.

Use a Plunger
Basic as it may seem, a plunger is the fastest way to unclog a toilet. Get yourself a plunger that comes with a flange. Wear a pair of gloves, get hold of the plunger, and gently push it down the toilet. You don’t want to splash dirty water onto yourself by pushing too hard. Once you get a good air seal, start pushing the plunger hard enough and then remove the plunger to release the air seal. Repeat until the toilet is clear enough.
Vinegar and Baking Soda
The toilet is proving hard to flush and you have no plunger in sight. Use a mixture of vinegar and baking powder. Take a cup of baking soda and add it to the clogged toilet. Hold on for one or two minutes. When the time lapses, take two cups of vinegar and pour into the toilet. To avoid an overflow, pour the vinegar slowly as it tends to bubble after reacting with the baking soda. Allows the vinegar and baking soda to sit for a few minutes and then flush the toilet to clear the clog.
Plumbing Snake
Every homeowner should have a plumbing snake just in case there is a malfunction that needs to be dealt with. If any other method is not working, use an auger or closet snake to unclog your toilet. Push the auger down the toilet bowl and turn its handle clockwise. Every time you feel resistance, wind back the snake. Once the clog loosens, flush the toilet to clear it. It will take a few repetitions of this process to remove some stubborn clogs.
Hot Water and Dish Soap
If you do not have a plunger, boil water in a pot. Before the water boils, add dish soap into the toilet bowl. Take the boiling water and pour it into the toilet. Give the hot water and dish soap time to soften the clog. Flush the toilet to know if it is working properly. A combination of shampoo and sink hot water also works just fine. You don’t have to get water from the kitchen anyway.
